Author Interview: Serafima Bogomolova

Posted in ,

About the Author:
The author of a psychological thriller ‘My Trickster‘ and the editor of Avantoure infotainment blog, Serafima Bogomolova lives and works in Dubai, UAE.  Born and raised in St Petersburg, Russia, Serafima received a degree in English and American Literature in the private Institute of Foreign Languages. Her studies had a big influence on her literary preferences with her two favourite authors being Anton Chekhov, one of the greatest writers of short stories in history, and John Fowles, a master of mystification in post modern English literature.

Serafima’s love for travel and exploration brought her to many cities and countries including London, New York, Moscow, and Dubai. In Moscow, she had an opportunity to run a cigar magazine, Hecho a Mano, the first glossy publication on tobacco in Russia.

In 2006 her publishing experience led Serafima to launch her own rich media publication, Avantoure. This innovative, ahead of time project had made a stir in the digital publishing world and was produced in its avant-garde format until late 2009.

Her debut into literary world started in October 2010 in New York, where Serafima met a man whose dream prompted her to begin writing her first novel ‘My Trickster‘. The book was finished and self-published in the beginning of 2012.

Currently, Serafima divides her creative time between working on her second novel and editing Avantoure, recently re-launched as an infotainment blog.

Interview:

What made you want to become a writer?
My debut into literary world started in 2010 when I met a man in New York. And it was a vision he dreamt on Christmas Eve and shared with me that prompted me to begin writing my first novel 'My Trickster'.  Though this crucial event helped me launch my writing career, I do not regard it as something that made me want to become a writer. I believe that one does not
become a writer; one is born a writer. In my case, I have always known that I am a writer. It is just that at first, my career took a slightly different turn and I did not focus on writing books.

Where do you get your inspirations from?I get my inspiration from my own life and people and things that surround me. I am also inspired by other artists' work, by nature, by travelling, by conversations with interesting people, by reading books, by watching great movies...

Other than writing books, what else do you do in your free time?
I love to explore and study. For example, at the moment I am learning French, and I'm also trained to become a runner. I take pilates classes, read, watch movies, go out with my friends and travel a lot.

If you could work with another author, who would it be?
I love being independent and I prefer to work on my own.

What are major themes of your work?
There are three main themes that I worked with in 'My Trickster' book: internal conflicts of the main characters saturated with doubts, mistrust, and misperceptions; relationships between women and men corrupted with psychological games; and 'nothing as it seems' situations presented through different perspectives and angles.

What do you think people look for in a book?
My book is written in a way that encourages people to use their imagination and arrive at their own conclusions. That is why each particular reader will look for and find things that will be unique only to her/his experience of reading the book.

Are there any recent works that you admire?
I should say that the book History of a Pleasure Seeker by Richard Mason has had quite a profound effect on me. The reason for that being that Richard Mason created a very charismatic main character that I instantly connected to.

Review of Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Posted in ,

Synopsis:
Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.
Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.

As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner.(Taken from Goodreads)

Stars Given:

Overall View:
I got this book as soon as it was out.  I couldn't wait to see the continuation of where the book was left off.  The book started with introducing a new character named Scarlet for her red hair.  I loved how the author incorporated another fairy tale into this series.  It was very interesting to see Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood meet.  The story flowed really well and was able to show all the different emotions really well.  There were some very intense scenes when I had to put my phone down before I blew up from all the tension.  I think the story was well written.  I liked how there was a lot more action in this installment of the Cinder series.  I read this book the day it was out yet I didn't find enough time to post the review :(  One last comment I would like to make: I NEED the next installment.  The book ended at a MAJOR cliff hanger!

Characters:

Scarlet -
Description of Character: Scarlet is a character that some people may be able to relate to. The author was able to convey the distress that Scarlet feels as she faces each day with her grandmother.  Scarlet meets Wolf at a restaurant while Scarlet delivers some of her products.

Review of CharacterI LOVED Scarlet's character.  Scratch that, I love all main characters that can fight for themselves instead of waiting for a prince to walk by.  There were times that I think that perhaps Scarlet should listen to Wolf.  But this wouldn't really such an action packed story then...

Wolf -

Description of Character: A mysterious character.... Can't go any further than that or there would be too many spoilers.

Review of Character: I liked Wolf... Well.. At first, he seemed really cold.  But as the story continues, his past starts to unfold and all the reasons behind his attitude towards other people are unveiled.  I really liked how the story expanded on the process of how people like Wolf were created.

*Supporting characters not listed (Captain Thorne was an awesome character!)

Author Interview: LaTaeya Lane

Posted in , ,

About the Author:
Years of exposure within the writing and publishing world have made a lasting impact on author, LaTaeya Lane.  Writing since she was seven years old, Lane began jotting down phrases an themes, later turning them into poems and short stories.  Writing became such a passion throughout her youth that she bcame the Junior and Senior editor of her High School newspaper.  She wrote her first novel at the age of sixteen but was not seeking publication at that time in her life.  Lane entered several creative writing contests during her early years of writing and won a few of them.  Always captivated by the supernatural and elements of fantasy, Lane was inspired to write a series of books that focused on going beyond the boundaries of life and imagination. The angel vampire fantasy "Swept into the Darkness" is Lane's
first published book in a series called "Chronicles of the Celestial." Lane completed a degree in Social Sciences and currently works to support the education of special needs middle school students. Lane resides in the state of New Jersey with her husband Leo and is working on writing and publishing the second book in the series. Lane also loves to draw and paint. Traveling and experiencing a variety of different foods is also a deep passion of hers. Lane loves watching horror and fantasy movies and is a believer of the Ancient Alien Theory. Some of her favorite authors include, Charline Harris, Stephen King and Erick Von Daniken.

Interview:

What made you want to become a writer?

I have always been a writer. It is a part of my soul. Writing has been an element of creativity that has sparked my life ever since I was able to pick up a pencil and jot down my thoughts and ideas. I come from a long line of writers and artists starting with my Great Grandmother. Story telling is the legacy that marks my family.

Where do you get your inspirations from?

My inspirations come from a variety of sources. It could be a name, a place, the face of a person, or something as simple as a word. Inspiration for me is just another building block of my creative process.

Other than writing books, what else do you do in your free time?

When I am not playing with my six month old son, I love to read, draw and paint. Another passion of mine is also watching movies. Horror and Fantasy are my favorite cinematic genres.

If you could work with another author, who would it be?

If I had the opportunity to work with another author, it would be Charline Harris. She is the author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels. It would be an honor to co-write a supernatural fantasy with her.

What are major themes of your work?

Swept into the Darkness (Chronicles of the Celestial Book one) has several major themes. Each one is important, which makes the book unique. Angels and Vampires are the central theme, but centered around that is the theme of Good Vs. Evil, Overcoming strife and obstacles, Love Has No Boundaries, And Death is just the Beginning. Greek Mythology and Biblical elements are also included in the book/series which adds to the literary journey.

What do you think people look for in a book?

There are many things that I think a person looks for in a book, but that depends on what type of reader they are as well. Readers look to gain and learn information. They also look for a book to take them to another world or place. They want to lose themselves in an adventure far far away. Readers want to be entertained.

Are there any recent works you admire?

There are many books that I admire, but currently I am reading The Ancient Alien Question by an author named Phillip Coppins. I am really interested in The Ancient Alien Theory and I have read many books within the subject. This book is an incredible read and I admire it and the author very much so. I literature within the book is amazing and it has also been a great inspiration to me as an author as well.

Synopsis:
A broken and desolate Earth.  A young girl struggling to survive.  A lost boy with a powerful secret.

In the distant wake of a plague that has decimated the Earth's population, humanity is split into two: the rich and powerful live in the skycities that float overhead. while those who remain on the ground have gathered in settlements strewn across a dying planet.  Eighteen-year-old Terra Rhodan is a terrestrial--a denizen of the barren groundworld--who makes her living as a scav.  Long abandoned by her father, her caregivers gone, Terra supports herself and her younger brother, Mica, by scouring the earth for discarded scraps and metals to recycle for profit.  One day, while on a routine scavenging run, she discovers something that shocks her home settlement of Genisis X-16.  When the value of her discovery is revealed, Terra's world is turned upside down.

Terra suddenly finds herself asking questions no one will answer.  Her search for the truth lead her to Adam--a beguiling skydweller unlike any other she has ever met.  But Adam has secrets and a quest of his own, and with him by her side, the world Terra thought she knew begins to unravel.  Soon her discoveries unearth a terrifying conspiracy that has the potential to shatter everything--a revelation that will test the bonds of loyalty, family, and love.

The first book in debut author Gretchen Powell's anticipated Terrestrials series, Terra catapults you through a story filled with blood-pumping action, intrigue, and surprising twists that will both wrench and warm your heart.  As the hidden truths of this world unfolds, new dangers that loom on the horizon are sure to leave you waiting breathlessly for the sequel.

Excerpt:
The crunch of multiple footsteps sounds in my ears, and I know the unseen speaker is not alone. With achingly slow speed, I bend my knees to pick up my bag and pivot in the direction of the voice.

Three huge men stand about a yard in front of me, lined up in a row. All three of them sport shaved heads, making them almost indistinguishable from one another, save for their differing skin tones. Their long brown coats hang open, revealing bare chests covered with tattoos that creep from below their waistlines all the way up to their chins.

Raiders.

The man in the middle has a chain of thick golden links hanging around his throat. As I watch it bounce against his dark chest, I realize I’ve never actually seen raiders up close before. All that time spent thinking about Lee’s final moments, what his murderers had looked like. Turns out I had it pictured all wrong.

How did I not hear them coming? I always hear them coming.

Blog Tour: Hereafter by Jennifer Snyder

Posted in ,

Synopsis:
In Death I could finally see the importance of Life…

After being forced to become a Reaper Council member and being torn away from the one she loves, Rowan Harper must learn to accept her altered Fate as well as her death and move on. A task easier said than done, especially when witnessing those you love suffer in the wake of your death.

When an unlikely ally provides information that could change everything, Rowan sets out on a journey through Purgatory with her beloved by her side and a nonchalant Tracker to learn the true meaning of the word sacrifice. Another task which seems easier said than done, especially with the threat of Purgatory’s ability to corrupt your soul the longer you’re in its grip looming above their heads.

Book Excerpt:
Sadness swallowed me, erasing the emptiness I’d felt earlier. I touched my fingertip to the edge of the glass and focused all of my energy into moving the dust beneath. I felt the coldness of the glass finally meet with my fingertip and glanced to my dad, taking in his sobbing frame as I concentrated harder on moving the dust partials beneath my finger. As I lifted my finger away to be sure I’d succeeded in making an imprint at all within the dust, I felt the familiar tugging of my soul and noticed the first few tendrils of blackness snake around my ankles.

Dread filled me.

Blackness swirled around me like a dense fog, making me lose my concentration before I could do anything more with my message. Dread turned into panic and panic turned into frustration quickly as I took one last glance at my father. I watched as he tipped back the bottle he’d held in his hand and stared at the old picture of my mother and me.

I wouldn’t get the chance to console him with my dust-written message today.

The blackness swirled around my hips moving upward, slowly encasing my shoulders in its thick fog as it formed my cloak. The tugging grew stronger with each second that passed, until I could feel the summoning of the ruling humming through my soul. It was a sensation not to be ignored, although I had tried to before. It left me feeling as though my soul were a rubber band stretched too tight, to the point of snapping, and if I didn’t close my eyes right then and release myself from my unwillingness to go, then I surly would have ripped my soul in half.

This tugging was nothing new. I knew exactly what was about to happen—I was being called to another Reaper Ruling.

Author Interview: Jenelle Leanne Schmidt

Posted in ,
About the Author:
I grew up the oldest of four children. Every night before bedtime my father read to my siblings and me, and it was during these times that my love for adventure and fantasy were forged. While I adore the stories of the Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Prydain, the Wheel of Time, and the Chronicles of Narnia; it wasn’t long before my imagination led me to the creation of a world and story all my own.

Interview:
What made you want to become a writer?
I have always had a vivid imagination. I’ve been creating stories and writing them down for as long as I can remember. Becoming a writer isn’t something I every set out to do, it is simply who I am.

Where do you get your inspirations from?
I get inspiration everywhere. Stories I read, music I listen to, conversations with my friends and family, questions I have about life, the universe, and everything. Some ideas just spring to life fully formed, others need research, but inspiration is everywhere, if you know what to look for.

Other than writing books, what else do you do in your free time?
I have two young daughters and a house to take care of, which takes up most of my time. I am also an avid reader, mostly of sci-fi/fantasy and YA, though I’ll branch out occasionally. I love being outside, hiking, playing frisbee and soccer, going on bike rides, and horseback riding.

If you could work with another author, who would it be?
Timothy Zahn. I love how he has managed to write sci-fi and fantasy without getting stuck in a single world or series. I admire his ability to create multiple book worlds and each one is new and different.

What are major themes of your work?
Good versus Evil, Loyalty and Betrayal, Revenge and Forgiveness, Courage versus Fear, Heroism, Nobility, and Self-Sacrifice.

What do you think people look for in a book?
I think people look for a good story, first and foremost. They want something that is well-told and interesting. They also look for engaging characters, someone they want to see succeed, someone to root for.

Are there any recent works that you admire?
I really admire how Terry Brooks has reenergized his Shannara series with a prequel series that gives it an interesting new twist.
I also recently finished reading Into the Vast, by D.J. Edwardson, a new independent author, that I really enjoyed.

Graldon also promised King Llian that the dragons would come to the humans’ aid should Aom-igh ever be in such danger again. Years passed, and Aom-igh remained safe and isolated from its enemies. The dragons slowly disappeared and faded into legend and myth, and people forgot magic had ever existed.

Author Interview: Kathy Bosman

Posted in

About the Author:
I've been writing for about ten years now. I started off writing children's books.  Then my husband suggested that I try an adult novel. I enjoyed writing it so much, and it turned out to be a romance. That made me realise that I could bring my love of romance into my writing. My writing has evolved over the years from partial romance, to inspirational romance, historicals (which didn't work at all!) to sweet, contemporary romance.

I've also learnt that writing isn't just about writing - that so much thought goes into it, there's also the editing process which is actually even more work than the writing process, and lastly, once the book is out, there's promoting of your book.  But I love it!

Besides writing, I keep myself busy by homeschooling my three children (okay one is a teenager), tackling piles of laundry and dishes, making all sorts of food from scratch, and helping out with raising funds for the local Cubs and Scouts. Reading and watching romantic movies help me unwind.

Interview:

What made you want to become a writer?
Even as a child, I loved writing and realised I may have a talent when I won a writing competition.  I’ve always enjoyed reading and stories. My desires changed as I grew up, but that seed was planted in my heart. It germinated when I was an adult and going through a time in my life when I lacked mental stimulation. I took a writing course and my writing evolved from there.

Where do you get your inspirations from?
My greatest inspiration started with C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia books. I wanted to write like him one day. As an adult, I enjoy reading romance and that inspires me. Another inspiration is my wonderful writing buddies from the Romance Writers of South Africa Group (ROSA.) And of course, my husband inspired my love of romance – he opened my heart to romance by bringing it into my life.

Other than writing books, what else do you do in your free time?

I love reading, especially romance – there must be a happy ending. I also enjoy fantasy novels.
When I have lots of energy, I enjoy doing crafts like knitting, sewing or making things with my kids.  Occasionally, I dabble in oil painting.

If you could work with another author, who would it be?

Possibly Katie Fforde or Rachel Haupt. What a privilege that would be!

What are major themes of your work?

I generally try to keep my books light and happy with a bit of symbolism interspersed inbetween but some of my recent books have a bit more conflict. My general theme is how love heals the hearts of those who find it in my novels.

Most of my novels are with characters who are pursuing a career goal in life and then love comes along. They are mostly set in South Africa, my home country.

What do you think people look for in a book?

There is such a vast variety of tastes. I know because I belong to a book club and everyone there looks for something different. One lady loves to get inside the criminal mind so she loves thrillers, the other one likes anything that’s out of the ordinary and unique, the other one enjoys fantasy and historicals, and I’m the romance girl. But essentially, every one of us wants to be held to the end and touched in some way by the book – either entertained, given food for thought, or touched in their emotions. Most of the readers will wade through a slow start but very few will enjoy a poor ending.

Are there any recent works you admire?

I read so many good books that I find that really hard to say. I’m totally taken with Ted Dekker’s “The Circle” series. Besides that, I love Katie Fforde, Rachel Haupt, Romy Sommer and Jennifer Shirk’s books.

Book Excerpt:
Alessa held her hand up.  "Just save it, Janie.  My mind is made up, and nothing you say is going to change it.  I'm going to warn Issac, and I don't care about the couldn't live with myself if I didn't try."

Janie looked like she was about to argue, but she let it go.  "Okay, fine.  I have to go to the library now, but we can talk later.  Just...don't do anything rash," she pleaded.

Alessa just gave Janie a stony glare.  She could see the hurt on Janie's face and felt a pang of remorse, but she just couldn't seem to let the anger go.

Janie turned and left, closing the door cautiously behind her, and Alessa dropped into her desk chair.  She was shaking with rage from head to toe.

However, Carter's back at school in a matter of days, as if nothing had happened. Although, he is a little "glitchy," and he's developed a sudden and intense interest in Mary. She thinks he's suffering from major brain trauma from the accident. Or that he's been possessed.

As it so happens, Carter really is possessed. And the thing controlling him is having the time of its life learning to be human.

Hunter has a lot on his plate.  A recent divorce, a pregnant sister and now he realizes he's in love with a woman who lives states away.  Can he overcome the boundaries of Internet romance to make this desire turn into something real, or will adversity and distance be their undoing--adversity being in the form of his very own sister--the woman who bullied Ciara so mercilessly long ago?

This book was formerly titled A Facebook Affair and has been revised with a new ending.

Message from the Author...
I'm pleased to share with you the latest release, Love Request.  This one is special to me because it's not only the first romance I've penned, but it features a "hearing-impaired" heroine like myself.

I say "hearing-impaired" because really, there's nothing wrong with Ciara.  She's not damaged or in need of repair.  She just can't hear as well as others.

As a reader, I grew tired of all the women in romance novels being perfect.  In real life, many of us have disabilities--and they are disabilities others can't see.  And worse, they are disabilities others can't understand and a lot of times what people don't understand becomes something they fear...and belittle.

This is where the bullying comes in.  You see, this is more than just a romance novel.  Open its pages, hit that Kindle "next page" button, and find out yourself.  Learn.  Be enlightened.  Relate.

Want to sample it first?  No problem.  Available on Kindle and FREE for the next five days, is a humorous Valentine short story, Mating Instinct.  You'll find the first chapter of Love Request at the end.

Thank you for celebrating this special time with me.  Happy Valentines Day!  In honour of you, I'm giving away a print copy of Love Request, a plush dog, a lipstick for that special date, and 5 pheromone-soaked chocolate incense sticks!  WARNING: Be careful if dogs are in the vicinity.

Author Interview:
What made you want to become a writer?
I've been writing stories since I was in middle school.  For me, writing is my release, my therapy, my escape to a world better than the one I'm in.  I have the control over what happens.  I guess the best thing about being a writer is speaking without interruption.  I can say what I feel is important.  I can make people think just by speaking my mind.

Where do you get your inspirations from?
My inspiration comes from everyday life.  The experiences I have had, things I have overheard.  My day to day life gives me plenty of material.  Every good thing, every bad thing.  Also the regional folklore from Northwest Florida gives me inspiration.  There is so much history here and I want to share it, with my own twist of course.

Other than writing books, what else do you do in your free time?
In my free time, I like to garden, bird watch, travel, take photographs, paint, and make jewelry. I also love to travel and collect antiques.

If you could work with another author, who would it be?
I really love PC And Kristen Cast and have enjoyed reading the House of Knight series.  I would think it would be awesome to do something with them.

What are major themes of your work?
My major themes deal with being different...there's nothing wrong with being the black sheep.  Also that looks are deceiving.   My stories involve strong, independent women in a time period when women were supposed to be seen but not heard.

Are there any recent works you admire?

There are several but I would have to say The Hunger Games Trilogy.  Especially the second book in the series, Catching Fire.

Which character in the book do you think you can relate to the most?
I probably relate the most to Lola.  She's the black sheep of her family.  She's hot-headed and opinionated.  She's a free and wild spirit but yet under all of that, she's broken...fragile.  Much like the honeysuckle vines that run rampant throughout Omega, her hometown.

What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
Inspiration for this book comes from several sources: my college studies of serial killers, my own personal experiences in small town life (dealing with hypocrites, whores, and people riding coat tails of their family name), regional ghost stories and true life events my family told me about from their lives growing up poor in the South during the Depression.
